A home built apparatus has been developed capable of vacuum sputter deposition of carbon overcoats and vapor deposition of lubricant films. The same apparatus is equipped with an x-ray photoemission spectrometer for analysis of overcoat surfaces and a quadrupole mass spectrometer for temperature programmed desorption.
