Pioneer Joins DSSC as Newest Associate Member

April 23, 2010

The Data Storage Systems Center recently welcomed Pioneer as its newest associate member. This collaboration with the DSSC will give researchers at Pioneer access to the center's leading-edge research, while providing the DSSC with financial support to maintain its innovative efforts in data storage technologies.

"At the DSSC, close collaboration with our industrial sponsors is key to the innovation process, allowing us to keep our research relevant while designing projects focused on viable data storage technologies," said Jimmy Zhu, DSSC director and ABB Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "Associates receive access to the cutting-edge research emerging from the DSSC, which they can use in their own product research and development. The joint research between industry and academia nurtured in the DSSC makes us unique among research groups and has been a vital component of our success. We welcome Pioneer, and look forward to a long and productive relationship with them."

Founded in Tokyo in 1938 as one man's dream to share the music he loved through quality audio speakers, Pioneer has since grown to international stature as a manufacturer of audio and video products for use at home, in the car and in business environments. Pioneer also focuses on LED research, and holds numerous patents related to DVD recorders, plasma display panels, car navigation systems and other products.

As a DSSC associate — the highest level of sponsorship available in the center — Pioneer will receive numerous benefits, including the ability to sponsor two research projects in the center and access to all DSSC research reports before they're published. They will also have close interaction with DSSC graduate students, whom they can discuss research problems with or recruit for temporary or permanent positions; and faculty members, who work closely with associates to collectively solve the next generation of information storage problems. Pioneer will also receive a license to DSSC intellectual property on all projects originating in the center during the sponsorship period, and will be invited to serve on the center's advisory board and attend its semiannual technical reviews.

Pioneer joins the ranks of data storage companies working with the DSSC to advance the hard disk drive industry. Other sponsoring companies include Headway Technologies, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, MagIC Technologies, SAE, Samsung Electronics, Seagate, Showa Denko, TDK and Western Digital.
