DSSC industrial affiliate TDK recently announced that it has achieved the world's highest surface recording density in a hard disk drive (HDD): 803 Gbits/in2. During the past two years, DSSC researchers contributed to this significant accomplishment by working with industry to demonstrate the means to achieve area density gain via discrete track media. They have also provided fundamental understanding of the medium design for discrete track media technology, which is used in the announced TDK demo.
