DSSC Holds Spring Technical Review

March 31, 2006

Carnegie Mellon's Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) held their spring technical review from March 28-29 with sessions in heads, hard disk drive (HDD) media, memory, new initiatives, channels and servos, tape technology, and optical and heat assisted recording.

Approximately 120 participants attended, including industrial affiliates, faculty, staff, and students. Several guests were also invited, with representatives from seven companies considering DSSC membership.

At the review, the DSSC announced the new PSI:/DRIVE (Pittsburgh Storage Initiative), a plan to help Pittsburgh grow into an information storage epicenter by working with regional economic development organizations. In addition, Carnegie Mellon officials signed a memorandum of understanding with representatives of A*STAR — the Agency for Science, Technology and Research of Singapore — as a first step in the formation of a Ph.D. fellowship program.

DSSC technical reviews are held twice a year to update the center's members, invited guests, and DSSC personnel on current research progress through oral presentations and poster sessions.
