On September 22-23, the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) hosted their semi-annual research review for industrial sponsors. In attendance were 42 visitors from 21 companies and nonprofits, representing 11 of the DSSC's 13 current industrial sponsors. Eighty-nine researchers from Carnegie Mellon participated. Additionally, six external attendees from four organizations connected via webcast and eight organizations visited the DSSC to consider joining the consortium.
Students presented 22 talks and 46 posters on subjects including hard disk drive (HDD) technology, tape technology, optical storage, probe storage and non-volatile memory. A highlight of the event was the technology forecasting session, in which faculty offered their perspectives on the future of several technologies. After dinner, Robert Lowe, Assistant Professor of Social and Decision Sciences, discussed Carnegie Mellonís activities supporting spin-off companies.
