Education at the DSSC

A major goal of the Center is to greatly expand the number of undergraduate and graduate students educated at Carnegie Mellon and other U.S. universities for work in the data storage industry. A comprehensive multi-disciplinary curriculum for students in data storage systems is available, and material on data storage systems has been incorporated into a broad spectrum of ongoing courses.

In addition, the Center has developed courses for industry in a variety of formats: short courses, video courses, continuing education courses taught at the industrial facilities, and our CD-ROM tutorial on data storage systems.

DSSC-related classes

The classes listed here are Carnegie Mellon courses that have data storage issues as their main focus. There is a data storage technology minor for interested students. In addition, many CMU engineering and science courses, both undergraduate and graduate, use data storage examples as part of the curriculum.

Graduate Admissions Information

Students who work in the Data Storage Systems Center will receive a traditional M.S., M.E., or Ph.D. degree in one of six engineering or science disciplines, and will focus their research work on a data storage related project. CD-ROM Tutorial

The DSSC is proud to offer an interactive, multimedia tool to educate and train a broad audience in the fundamentals of magnetic and optical recording systems. This 21-hour, seven-CD-ROM set can be used independently, as part of a training class, or as supplemental material in an academic course.
